Happy 2011! Goodbye 2010-Year end review

Every year I write a year end post. This year, I thought for a long time what I should write it about. I even reviewed my prior year end posts here (2005), here (2006), and here (2008).

Each year, I see some similarities. But this year I can say with pride that I have accomplished many of the goals I had aspired to do back in 2005, some in 2006 and at least one in the 2008 posting.

I have officially lost 102 pounds as of this posting. I read every single day even for 10 minutes, and I read holistic books, novels, fiction, and even classics. I pray everyday. I am beginning to love my body or at least find some peace with it. I've met with no fear the ghosts of the past and gotten some closure.

There are ups and downs as there always are. And while I find I have no philosophical words of wisdom to offer, I offer myself. My trials and tribulations, my successes and tears. I offer them for they are just as precious as inspired thought. They represent me, and I represent someone special in a sea of someone specials numbering in the billions.

I hope this year love finds me. I hope that I”m open to seeing it. I believe I am ready for an emotionally healthy relationship. It's been 8 years as of this writing for any relationship of any length that was healthy. There have been some who stood out, but none with the longevity that I seek. Perhaps I wasn't ready, but I believe I'm ready now.

For the first time since 2004 when I started blogging I have a small amount of financial security. It isn't much but it's mine and I hold it closely to my heart. I've worked hard to get here. When I look now to the future it doesn't seem so dark as it did when I started this public journey. I'm sure there will be storms along the way, in fact I expect them; but as I approach the big 4-0, surprisingly I'm not as afraid as I thought I'd be.

It seems as if I'm meant to be right here where I am. I'm ok with that, for the first time, I'm ok with that.

I continue with the list of aspirations that seem to help me so. It's short but it's of quality. Lets hope that in my aspiring to do these things, I inspire others to do great things as well. That is of course, my ultimate goal.

Aspirations for 2011

  • I aspire to lose another big amount of weight and reclaim at the age of 40 the body I lost as the age of 21.

  • I aspire to find myself doing something in a field of counseling or helping others in even a volunteer way that not only feeds my soul but also helps people feel better, do better, live well.

  • I aspire to light candles for those I pray for every day. Again as I listed in one of my prior posts, they're small and quite possibly no one ever sees them but I like to think in a whisper they know someone is thinking of them and ultimately it makes me feel good.

  • I aspire to finish my novel that has been in progress for a long time

  • I aspire to finish my vision board

  • I aspire to laugh more often

  • I aspire to not take life so damn seriously.

  • I aspire to be true to my self to be authentic in my journeys, wherever they take me, whatever foreign place I may land with it, I aspire to always be me and not what people think I should be.

  • I aspire to love, even if I don't find a mate, a partner; I will aspire to be the messenger of love showing people that love can be felt in many ways and not everything has to fit a stereotype.

  • I aspire to talk to my angels more, to allow them to guide me as I did in 2006 when even faced with a threatening disease I still felt empowered and alive.

  • I aspire to go out more, to not be so afraid of criticism in peoples eyes, choosing instead to assume they look because they're amazed at my beauty.

  • I will start my day in gratitude for at least one thing, everyday because to live in gratitude is to live in joy

  • I will be more thankful for the little things and more vocal to others about it as well so they know they are loved.

  • And I will find a way to put my quotes at my desk and offer them up to anyone who wants them. May they bring someone joy, like others bring me joy.

I am looking forward to 2001. With the passing of 2010 and no major hospital issues, I'm thinking the spell of health issues that plagued me might be lifted. I also will remember my mantra everyday: I am happy, healthy, wealthy, and... sane grin

We could all use some sanity in an insane world yes?

Wishing all who stop by here, joy, peace and love that brightens the darkest days. Know you are loved.

Year end review; Goodbye 2008

When I think of this past year, I think of major change. A lot can occur in twelve months, a relatively short time in number, but in time it can either feel like an eternity or zip by in a blink.

It has taken me a few weeks to think of and write my end of year post. I wasn’t sure how to word what I wanted to say, wasn’t sure how much I WANTED to say and no matter how I thought about it; I seemed to trip over my words like a newborn unable to walk properly.

In my previous two years, End of year posts, I listed several aspirations. The idea was nice, it felt good and it served me well in the past two years. I actually did do some of the things I set out to do and for those that I didn’t do, I felt no guilt (very important for someone like me :P). But the really important things never got worked. Sure there were some that ranked pretty high on my list of things to do, but the health ones never got worked.

So despite last year’s constant change, (the events and trials of which I won’t bother to recount)…I have decided to focus on only one goal this year. One constant to try and balance the chaos that sometimes surrounds my life.

This year I will get healthy.

It’s multi-layered in its design. Healthy to me means, losing weight, balancing a healthy spirituality and really delving into what makes me happy; Spiritual, mental, and physical health.

I suffer from depression. It’s not constant, but when it hits usually because of any number of mundane things that transpire, it can deeply affect me. This depression acts as a catalyst for apathy, allowing the goals and ideas I have set aside to practice or do, to just…sit there untended.

In order to work on the mental side of my ‘get healthy” new year resolution/aspiration/goal. I will attack my depression. I have two blogs, this one and another
http://serane.wordpress.com that I can utilize to password protect posts if I need to express something less desirable (blogspot does not allow for password protection I don’t believe). I will write everyday. Even if it’s just in my private journal, even if it’s just two words, I will write everyday.

In order to work on the spiritual side of my “get Healthy” new year resolution/aspiration/goal, I will dive into the practices I’ve read about for so many years but only practiced every once in a while. Specifically to start, with meditation. I get up early enough and have help around the house now (thank you Lonny!) that I have a little bit more time in the mornings. 10 minutes shouldn’t be that hard to find to sit quietly.

In order to work on the health side of my “get healthy” new year resolution/aspiration/goal, I will attack my depressive tendencies with regards to my physical health. I will walk more, I will eat less, I will eat better, and I will find things to do to keep me occupied, and keep me stimulated when I get bored. This is by far the hardest part of it; finding ways to keep occupied (especially at work). Even while watching TV I find that I’m idle and in comes the mentality of wanting to eat something.

I find that within me is a little girl who has been let loose to do whatever she wants for a very long time. And now it’s time to take the control I love to exert in other areas in my life, to her and show her the good side of accomplishment as opposed to the good (but temporary) feeling of doing whatever I want, which will inevitably kill me…

Wish me luck.

Year End Review; VERY LONG post

From My Home to Yours

“There are times to cultivate and create, when you nurture your world and give birth to new ideas and ventures. There are times of flourishing and abundance, when life feels in full bloom, energized and expanding. And there are times of fruition, when things come to an end. They have reached their climax and must be harvested before they begin to fade. And finally of course, there are times that are cold, and cutting and empty, times when the spring of new beginnings seems like a distant dream. Those rhythms in life are natural events. They weave into one another as day follows night, bringing, not messages of hope and fear, but messages of how things are.” ~Chogyam Trungpa

“May today mark the beginning of many new joys and accomplishments... and a continuation of all of the good things that you have already achieved.”

“Remember today, for it is the beginning of always. Today marks the start of a brave new future filled with all your dreams can hold. Think truly to the future and make those dreams come true.”

Looking Back - The year in review

It's time for the year end review. I went back and re-read last years "Year End review" post and I see a lot of similarities in that writing to this writing. When I think back on this year, there were so many things I wanted to accomplish. So many of them I did NOT accomplish, but luckily, I was able to accomplish a few.

One of the first things I remember about my year end post last year was that I wanted to aspire to have a blog that centered on the real life of this "muse", but not so much the darkness. That is not an acknowledgement of it's existence but more a reflection on the light side that inevitably tags along with the dark side. I think short of a few times when darkness was just too overwheliming, I have provided a place where I can come back and reflect on my life with a small smile. I acknowledge and accept the darkness that carries me away with the tide, but embrace the light that always brings me back to the shore too.

Had I known when I was writing my year end review last year that in just 7 short months my life would be literally catapulted into a nightmare that I would never be able to fully comprehend, I might have tried harder to do the things I wanted to do daily. Things such as meditiation, spiritual grounding, and tending to my heart's wounds and loving myself more fully. Hindsight is great in retrospect though, isn't it? I have had cancer. I have survived cancer. I have a deeper understanding of the illness that plagues so many even terminally so and through the eyes of cancer, I have come to a deeper wisdom about the compassion we must share with people despite and maybe BECAUSE OF our own issues. I hope this lesson in particular that has been burned into my heart through Jessie and my own suffering continues to remind me that always my issues while they may FEEL paramount, are relatively large only because they are my own. There are many others out there suffering and some of those even do great things through their suffering. My attempt to accept, love, share and give hope is just a small attempt to heal people one at a time. It's like that map that shows you how much light is used around the world... Each of those lights represents a person and every person is shining their light, yet 3/4 of the world is still dark or very dim. We all have to do our part to do better at shining for someone else or with many others.

In the love department I am still lacking in so many ways. I try hard every day to remember that while the possibility of a life not shared with a partner exists for me, that even if this is the case, I have a partner in myself. It's a hard thing to remember and it's remembered kind of like when you have to take horrible tasting medicine. You have to FORCE the reminder down and even then sometimes it doesn't stick.

I have published four books this year. They were self published and they were small in the whole scheme of things, but *I* did it. My name is in print and the words on each of the pages is from my heart. I can think of no greater accomplishment than that of the written word for us as a whole, and for me as a person the words of my heart were seen. This makes me smile.

I have made a contribution that I feel is spectacular. After 4 years of growing my hair (mostly not cutting it due to funds and such), i finally got it cut. I remember when i resigned myself to having cancer that I promised if I had to have chemo and would lose my hair I would donate it to Locks of Love. While some may say this was admirable, the truly admirable thing to do was to promise that if I survived cancer I STILL would do this because someone out there needed it. Two days ago, I cut 10 inches off my hair and donated it to locks of Love. I was never more proud of myself then when I did that. My hair is much shorter than I planned on, but it doesn't matter. It was for the best cause I can think of. I promised I would do this, and when I didn't have to keep that promise, no one would have monitored it... I still did. And it felt GOOD. I've committed myself to letting my hair grow long again and then cutting it again so that my small contribution can continually be felt somewhere for someone very special.

These are a few of the things that stand out. There are so many others. There were some dark times, some light times, lots of tears, deep hugs, heartfelt love, genuine friendship, and even some wine ;) Overall looking back on this year, I can say i've been truly blessed. I've been blessed to have a few people read this blog and understand what I go through. I've been blessed by rekindling of friendship, new friendships and the gift of hope inspired upon me by so many. I've been able to open myself to the needs of others in small ways, and thus reacquire the vision that sometimes gets lost when you get mired down in life; the vision of hope. But there is so much more to be done. There are still so many who walk around lost in their hearts. There are entire countries who live in poverty and so much strife throughout the world still exists. I cannot take those away. I truly wish I could even if it meant death to bear all those burdens. because if I can do that for people, then others might see and do the same. But I can't. Sometimes I feel so helpless in it all, but... and this is important. I have HOPE, and that is paramount.

Because after all is said and done. After all the tears have been shed, all the dreams dashed, lies told, friendships lost, I've still come away in a win situation, because I have hope & because I have my dreams. In the movie The Never Ending Story, one person's dream saved the whole world. It created the hope that so many rested upon. So at the end of this year, I look back and am grateful for the hopes and dreams that so far, nothing has dashed into oblivion.

Hopes & Dreams, they are what my heart rests comfortably in now. They will carry me as well as you into a future where one by one we can change the world if you allow yourself to have the power to do so. Going forward, I will try to use that vision that gift given to me, and bestow it on others in a much bigger way. I am just one person, but my hope and my dream is so much bigger than just me. That is the lesson I've learned this year and it's a lesson I'll never forget.

Going Forward - Aspirations for my future

Going forward, I have again as I did last year decided that I will "aspire" to reach certain goals. I do not make resolutions, I feel that they are more easily broken where as aspirations are pliable, moving with the ebb and flow of life and allowing you to still feel accomplishment with no guilt if not 100% completed.

So here's the partial list:

I aspire to continue to lose weight. To understand that my body bears the scars of my life both phsycially and emotionally. And that it is time to welcome my body back unto me with open arms.

I aspire to be a less emotional person particularly in game where people who can and are often jerks, alsways seem to make me cry when they do not care for others. On the same lines I will continue to accept people into my heart without letting them into my sanctuary so that I always have the place I know of safety where I can be grounded and full again so I can continue to give to others.

I aspire to get involved with some cancer charity or organization and make a contribution of whatever I can do, to help people who discover this disease taking permanent residence in their body, get through the time they have it and get back to living.

I aspire to read more.

I aspire to remember everyday especially when life has me down as it often does, that I am special just as much as I tell everyone else they are. That I was put on this world for a reason and while that reason escapes me many times, it is there and I need only look in the mirror to understand it's significance.

I aspire to look in the mirror everyday and tell myself I love myself and accept my body as it is, and as it will be while it's changing.

I aspire to read other people's blogs more and comment more. I cannot tell you how it feels to see comments on your words. And along these lines I aspire to let these people even total strangers know that they are a blessing to me everyday.

I aspire to find fulfillment not only in the things I want, but in the things I have already. To remember that while I can keep moving in the stream of life sometimes it's nice to just sit by the side and enjoy the fruits of my labor no matter how meager.

I aspire to be a better friend to those in my sanctuary. To be more attentive to their needs and helping to keep their souls aligned and grounded when they need it.

I aspire to love someone this year as a partner. To write more about the love I want, hope for and seek it in the right places without settling for less than I know to be what I need.

I aspire to put some of my demons to rest. To feed my soul so my heart can mend where it is torn.

I aspire to Light More Candles. I know they're small, I know most don't even see them, but I know that it makes my heart warm to do this. And in a cold world where trust, love and friendship is a commodity, they are all I have some days. And they are worth my time as are the people I offer them to.

and finally I aspire to be thankful everyday even in quiet prayer or just by saying a name in acknowledgement, for the people in my life who have made such a huge difference to me.

And in the words of the character known as Valerie in the movie V for Vendetta:

I hope that the world turns and things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you or kiss you... I love you. With all my heart, I love you.

And Remember:

A dream is the only real reality in life because it belongs to you. An imagination develops both the aspects of the dream and also gives you the motivation to make your dreams a reality. Remember to always give more than you take in life, and never stop dreaming.

2005 in Review; 2006 Going Forward

So it’s the end of the year; and the start of a new one. I have been thinking about what to write for about two days now. I wanted to write some philosophical work of art, something that would you leave you all going… “Wow”. But unfortunately I lack the creativity and brainpower for that.

Then I thought, I know, I’ll write about MY year… and I realized I’ve been blogging since November 2004 so you all already KNOW what my year was like. Besides, even if you’re new to reading this blog you know that most of it focuses on love (or my lack thereof), how my job sucks, and health issues. Occasionally I pepper it with some light, but mainly it’s a salty dish of rants and ravings.

Then I though maybe I’ll just write some incredibly cool poem, or quote some really nifty verse or something from somewhere and offer some bits of wisdom…but there are plenty of sites that offer that already.

So what I’m left with in the end, is the proverbial white piece of paper. Funny enough when I stared at it long enough I began to think, how odd that this should resemble where my life is. Empty. I don’t mean that in a dark depressed sort of way, but my life is lacking. Funnier still is that I seem to be the reason it is so.

In the twelve steps of any rehabilitation program the first step is recognition. I seem to be stuck there. Knowing I need to make a change, deciphering from the cryptic thoughts of life what the change is I need to do, and actually acting on them are entirely different things.

Maybe I just need to grow up. Maybe I just need to refocus. Maybe… But I need to do something. The things that made me happy once, make me happy now, only some of the time.

The New Year brings about a time when people feel they will resolve to do something good in their lives. I’ve not fallen into that trap before because I just didn’t feel a need. This year, while the need has presented itself I step back because I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew. So I’ll start small. So in the end what I’ve decided to blog as my year end for you all is a list of my resolutions. I hope you’re not disappointed, the list is small. But the quality of the list I think, is good…They are followed up by my aspirations, things I hope to achieve this year, but will not be depressed and sad if I do not achieve them (as long as I’m on my way toward them).

Resolutions
~I resolve to read once every other month, a book that is good for my soul. I can be any book on love, awakenings, enlightenment, weight loss, emotional stability, etc. ANYTHING that is good for the soul. I allow myself ONE faltering in this resolution, meaning I can skip only once.
~I resolve to sleep a MINIMUM of 6 hours a day, even if it’s during the day on the weekend.
~I resolve to reincorporate spirituality into my life in baby steps. It can be something small, perhaps a simple morning meditation or a single tarot card daily, etc.
~I resolve to not let people into the sacred spot in my heart where most people who would cause me harm have found themselves. I resolve to strengthen my wall of light around my inner realms to help make this resolution happen.
~I resolve to incorporate love into my life, starting with love of self. Tiny affirmations I’m writing to be put in a jar and chosen ever day, that will tell me all about me and how I should love myself every day.
~I resolve to be open with myself and add to this list as I feel the need helping me to keep on track where I may step and falter so that I do not fail in the above mentioned items.

Aspirations
~I aspire to be going to some form of spiritual community with some regularity. This can be alone if nothing suitable for group is found
~I aspire to write even just two sentences a day of light. These can be added onto my poems of dark or as an afterthought.
~I aspire to use the above mentioned resolutions to further the physical things I need to do for myself such as lose weight and eat healthy.
~I aspire to sleep a full 8 hours a day and be well rested for my health and sanity

Let’s hope that this helps me help myself to be happier and more effective in helping others offline and online…that which I LOVE to do.

To all of you reading this…
XO
